It is with utmost sadness that we have to inform road race fans, riders, teams and the media that the 2018 Oliver’s Mount Cock O’The North road races on June 23rd/24th 2018 have had to be cancelled.

Auto 66 Club and its team of volunteers have been working with Scarborough Borough Council for the last 6 months trying to bring the circuit up to the new strict, safety standards that will ensure not just the road races in 2018 continue, but also future events at Oliver’s Mount.

So far, the new required safety levels have not been achieved and so it is with a heavy heart that we have to cancel the 2018 Cock O’The North road races.

With regards to ticket refunds we will continue to try and resolve this complicated situation as soon as possible.

We continue to work closely with Scarborough Council to try and rectify the current situation and will update with any news in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately the Car and Bike Show this weekend at the Oliver’s Mount Festival of Speed has had to be cancelled.

The hillclimb events will continue to run as per the schedule but due to a lack of uptake from car and bike clubs we have unfortunately had to cancel the displays we had planned.

With a record entry the hill climb is set to be a great event and we look forward to getting racing going again at Oliver’s Mount this weekend.

With just 2 days to go, the 2018 Oliver’s Mount Festival of Speed is looking like being one of the biggest hill climb events ever to be staged at Oliver’s Mount.

With over 110 bike entries and 50 car entries, there will certainly be plenty of action to watch.

The Festival of Speed compliments an amazing weekend of sport with Scarborough once again hosting a stage of the Tour De Yorkshire cycle race. If you are in town for the cycling, why not come and watch 2 wheels going just a little faster!

The weekend of the 21st & 22nd April 2018 brought together friends, fans, riders, marshals and media all showing their support for Oliver’s Mount racing, it was a fantastic turn out, creating a memorable atmosphere.  Documentation was read by many regarding the situation at Oliver’s Mount.

In October 2017 an enquiry was held regarding the incidents at the ‘Steve Henshaw International Gold Cup Races’ in September 2017, the outcome was declared                                                                                           ‘members of the club and additional services were praised for their professionalism and the way the incidents had been dealt with.’

During late October, a directive by the insurers to the ACU stipulated a risk assessment to be carried out at all Road Race Circuits, Oliver’s Mount’s inspection was undertaken by the ACU.                                                                                                                                                   On the 11th January 2018 a working plan, set up in 3 phases and agreed to be completed over the coming years, all work agreed has been dealt with, leaving only 2-3 areas needing verification onsite by the ACU.                                                                                                                                                                 Discussion with the ACU about the many alterations required continued and was addressed again during a site visit on Wednesday 21st March 2018, the main points; placing of bales at Esses In and boarding of bales positions at Drurys.  Work started immediately, members worked over that weekend, ensuring all the work were completed by the following Monday evening, plus Oliver’s Mount expressed they held adequate Recticel to cover the areas involved.

Subsequently an ACU inspector’s report was produced which indicated the ACU’s disappointment, stating their reasons; un-completed work along with no additional Recticel purchased.

Every effort and further appeals for reconciliation with the ACU from Oliver’s Mount, along with support from George Peach at the Southern 100 club in the Isle of Man, allowing the use of 10 of their club’s Recticel bales but again the attempt failed.

The club are disappointed with the outcome having put in so much hard work.                                                                                      It is a distressing time for everyone involved with road racing, but be assured everything that can be done is being done, to make everything ready for the next Oliver’s Mount road race meeting.

The club are working with all concerned for the future of road racing in England.

It is with great sadness that we have to confirm the unfortunate news that the 2018 Oliver’s Mount Spring Cup event is cancelled.

For the last few months, many changes have been made around the circuit in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, to aid rider and spectator safety in preparation for us obtaining the required permit from the ACU to allow us to hold this event on April 21st/22nd.

New fences have been built, road signs moved, course markers purchased, additional marshals posts built and additional harris style fencing installed. The main problem however, remained with the amount of recticel that the Auto 66 Club would have to purchase to allow them to comply with the requirements of the ACU to obtain the necessary permit. The total of all recticel needed for the circuit is £90,000.

Peter Hillaby has worked tirelessly trying to obtain the required amount of recticel that would need to be added at key areas of the track. Sourcing recticel to hire has proven very difficult and the club simply could not afford to purchase the amount of recticel needed.

Our first club race at Cadwell Park was a chance for the Auto 66 Club to make some money to help fund the purchase of recticel. However, the weekend was tainted by a poor weather forecast and even worse weather on the day which actually caused day two of the event on Easter Monday to be cancelled. Rider numbers were extremely low and on a weekend that was supposed to help us raise funds, we actually lost money.

This week, we have continued to appeal to both the ACU and Scarborough council to give us more time to find a solution, one which we now feel we have with the kind gesture of the Ulster GP organisers offering us the required recticel; but it has just come too late to save this event with the permit and insurance needing to be in place already.

We are truly sorry to the race fans, riders, teams and media who have planned to attend our Spring Cup event. Postponing an event is something we do not take lightly, and we have fought as hard as we possibly could to get the Spring Cup Road Race event the permit it needs, but unfortunately it now has to be cancelled with a new date to be announced soon.

In the coming days we will be issuing another statement detailing the future plans for the Spring Cup event.

Thank you all for your messages of support. Oliver’s Mount is England’s only road race circuit. The history that has been created at this unique venue means we will not be ending the journey in this way.

This is not the end, but the start of a new, safer Oliver’s Mount road race venue.
